comment Why are certain default application associations “locked”?
If the user account doesn't have rights to modify the keys, that's why the checkbox isn't enabled, no? If you add your user to the permissions for the key, then it should be enabled.

comment What do I need to get an old 100MB Zip drive working?
@Doc: they have a great sense of humor. I came back to my main system, and it looks like the KVM switch hung - no keyboard or mouse, even when I switched manually. Had to power off both systems to get them working again. So I obviously should have listened to Moab and just had a drink. Rectifying that oversight now :)

@Moab: it's actually for my mother-in-law, who backed up financial data on zip disks.

Sigh. It looks like the IDE cable to the CDROM went bad the moment I touched it - the machine no longer recognizes the CDROM, even though it was working fine this morning. Plugging the Zip drive into the cable going to the HDD and it showed up in XP as a removable drive.

comment Laptops with Windows DVD media, not recovery system
I've had Dell ship me a disk months after purchasing the system, at no cost - that was a couple years back, so I don't know if that's still the case but it can't hurt to try.
