comment Why are the timestamps on files created on an NFS mounted partition different?
I guess my note about the NFS server having the correct time isn't clear. I logged into the server, and the time is the same, except that it is running a different time zone. The file "nfs" file in the question should then have a timestamp of 14:13, or at least something :13, but it appears to be off by more than an hour.

comment Any way to restore a UPS battery?
Fortunately, we have recycling depot close by - they take old batteries, paint, etc - so it was recycled.

@ingenous: I added an explanation for the tunnels.

comment How can I resume a large scp file transfer when using port forwarding?
The hops are needed because of the way the network on the destination server is configured. The problem with using rsync over ssh is that I need to use the local port 4567, the file does not exist on the 10.255.x.x server.

@Dennis: scp does not support resuming a transfer - what you suggest will restart the download.

comment Using bind mount causes some programs to error with “Only root can mount”
I think this is getting off-track - I'm curious why this happens, and if the way I'm using bind mounts is incorrect or if it's a problem with certain programs.

I don't want my backups to traverse symlinks, but I do want the Pictures/ backed up. But I don't really have a good reason for doing it this way other than I was trying something new.

@Moab: I tried IE, same results: I had to download & run that exe, which failed.

comment Is there any way to force a Windows 7 computer to process autoruns.inf on a USB stick?
@Zoredache: I realize that it opens up the possibility of infection, but in this case the risks are acceptable. And when the job is done, all of the machines are wiped and re-imaged anyways. The computer that would be used for consolidating the processed data would absolutely NOT have this feature enabled.

The machines are not networked.

comment Why doesn't the Logitech V200 mouse work with 64 bit Windows 7?
@Diogo - I agree, but I have tried it on 2 different 64 bit Win7 systems and had the same problem. Reset doesn't help - the Logitech 64 bit driver can talk to the mouse, and query the battery status, but not move the mouse. And when it's plugged into a 32 bit Win7 system, or an XP system, it works fine, without installing drivers.

It shows up, and is "working properly".

comment My laptop was stolen. What do I need to do?
@BonGart: I suggest that it's not the same. I'm not really trying to locate the stolen machine, but I'm interested if there are any inadvertent ways that I might be able to see if anyone has used it. Plus, the main goal is to find out what I need to do to ensure none of my web-based information is exposed.

comment Strange networking issue: Cannot log in if computer is on a switch
Well - I figured I had nothing to lose by trying these, and strangely enough it appeared to have fixed the problem. No idea why having a switch in the network path would affect this, though.

comment Strange networking issue: Cannot log in if computer is on a switch
Not really the issue - there isn't actually a problem with the domain controller or the local settings, since changing the way the machine connects to the network fixes the problem.

comment Where can I find audio drivers for a Dell Dimension 3100?
When I remove the existing driver, the XP "Add new hardware" wizard tries to install the IDT driver mentioned in the question. I do not have any other driver.
