The libdb4.8 is considered as obselete in recent Debian. Get it back from squeeze should have no impact for wheezy applications. But you're right I may get it built from sources too.

I disagree. I do not propose to install a Ubuntu binary package into a Debian. On the contrary, I use the only "dpkg" source package available and build it from "sources" with Debian tool chain (configure and make are invoked by dpkg-buildpackage !). Dependencies are checked at compilation and the only impact may be a non functional application, no issue for the system itself. With the benefits that uninstall or upgrade let the system clean.

That is a procedure "the Debian way", so without polluting system with raw files copy in /usr/local, but with a clean Debian package build and installation (so that uninstallation is easy and clean)

Question is about "bitcoin-qt". So why do you answer about "bitcoind" and "--without-gui" ?

comment How to determine what font an X application needs
So in your case, I guess xlsfonts and fc-list would have failed with a relevant error message, right ? If so, I guess you may accept my answer as a proper way to diagnose the issue you reported

You should compare your systems font list with fc-list and maybe rebuild cache with fc-cache -fv

If other applications work properly I guess your fonts are OK. What is xlsfonts output ? Is it possible to know what application is in trouble on your system ?

So you may install all font packages from your working system. Or you may use "ltrace" to get handle on libX11 calls and probably find the font name passed to "X_OpenFont" method...

Really relevant question ! In a standard situation a tool should declare its font dependencies properly in its GNU/Linux distribution specific package description. To fix such a trouble, most users seem to apply a guess-and-try font package installation loop until the tool no longer complains...
