Useful to know. I have discovered that though all my data files are there, there is no Windows folder - so I am now doing a clean install and then restore data.

@MichaelKjörling - no, the update number is randomly higher and lower. It seems to start from the beginning each time and stop at a different point.

"doesn't really matter which strand is which" - not really. It doesn't matter which pair is which. But if for instance you swap brown with green, you must correspondingly swap white/brown with white/green. Each twisted pair must be connected to a matched +/- pair of signals.

I've never looked for a software solution. I like the immediate access of hardware knobs. Good luck - I'll be intereseted to see if there is a software solution.

I only know what the linked article says "You need to go into the laptop hardware services to figure out what to do." Each laptop is probably different. I would look for some kind of manufacturer/model specific utility and or the BIOS settings.
