comment Is there a system to install multiple releases of all default linux applications for a given linux distro release series?
Forgive my ignorance, but would it be possible to install the NixOS package manager on a different distro?

Great idea. It will take me a long time to verify/accept this, but this is a good idea.

Unfortunately, that is correct. I would like to have access to each of these releases from one single system. I realize that 100% backwards compatibility is likely impossible, but I'm wondering if people are having some reasonable level of backwards compatibility without resorting to manual, recursive tarball madness.
