hi, a console colorizing utility:

Also, take a look at my Tabata Protocol soundtrack generator for Tabata'esque/ HIIT workouts here.

comment Is there a system to install multiple releases of all default linux applications for a given linux distro release series?
Forgive my ignorance, but would it be possible to install the NixOS package manager on a different distro?

Great idea. It will take me a long time to verify/accept this, but this is a good idea.

Unfortunately, that is correct. I would like to have access to each of these releases from one single system. I realize that 100% backwards compatibility is likely impossible, but I'm wondering if people are having some reasonable level of backwards compatibility without resorting to manual, recursive tarball madness.

alien is interesting. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I was actually looking for Statifier and Ermine per FSMaxbB.

Bingo! I just couldn't remember which terms to search for. Thanks!

I'm aware of ldd as well as what dlopen does, but this is a class of tool that cuts the gordian knot of dependency hell by simply including all the included shared objectsin a container and then chroot'ing so that the binary finds all the libraries underneath that directory. There are two implementations of this tool but the name escapes my memory. It is like creating a psuedo-static binary after the binary has already been created. It can make a binary portable between distros where LD_LIBRARY_PATH is different.

comment How to Keep Video and Audio in Sync When Ripping a DVD?
You can use VLC to manually adjust the audio/video sync on playback. See here. It's not ideal, but in a pinch it will work.

comment Download and install newer KDE without root access?
Indeed. I recently tried installing gnome from jhbuild in order to get all the prerequisites for a recent monodevelop and that was quite the rabbit hole. jhbuild is meant for installing and testing new releases of gnome in parallel to your normal desktop, yet it was endless dependency fetching. Meanwhile, I can install monodevelop in a few clicks on Windows. 'tis a shame.

comment Download and install newer KDE without root access?
I know that it is hard to do. I work inside of the Linux environment for a large corporation and getting new versions is like pulling teeth. I can and do install Ubuntu on my own virtual machines and home machines all the time, but I can't do my job on these machines.

comment Can GNU Grep output a selected group?
Is grep intelligent with the look-behind assertions? How does it perform with long look-behinds? Is it integrating the look-behinds into some sort of "suffix tree" with the rest of the regex?

Very nice. I was going to begin the process of rooting and installing the google app store today or tomorrow due to the number of purchases my kids keep making. Thanks gordoco!

No worries. It was a long-shot retort anyway :-P It just sucks when your question barely falls out of the scope of a stack-exchange site and there are no alternatives.

How does one petition to update the scope of a site? Will Windows 8 fall under this scope too?

Looks like that works well for bash environments. Too bad I'm in a corporate tcsh environment.

comment How can I split an audacity recording track at regular intervals?
wav format has no compression, so it won't have the associated data loss issues that compression has. I realize the loss is minimal when going to mp3, but I want to minimize distortion. I'll look into mkvtoolnix :-) Thanks!
