I am a software programmer and reverse engineer. I deal with x86 assembly and .NET programs on a regular basis.

comment Microsoft secure downloader not finishing download
The 0% and high RAM usage is likely due to the fact that the downloaded SDC file has to be integrity checked, "decrypted" and decompressed into a usable file. In fact, the program indicates that's happening on the progress bar.

comment How do I partition my HDD for use on XBox?
Fair enough. Still, I was pretty clear about the instructions being for the original Xbox, and offer hints for the 360. (I see the tag for xbox360 now, not sure if I noticed it before. It's been a year anyway, so it doesn't really matter now...)

Ah, I noticed the word "portable" now. For that matter, why would it be necessary to format the hard drive for Xbox in the first place, as FAT and NTFS formatted hard drives can be plugged in directly. Without a valid HDDSS it's not possible to do so anyway. BTW, a portable hard drive plus powered USB hub formatted FATX makes more sense on an original Xbox as the system software will format the drive FATX anyway.

comment Can't Delete Ghost Folder
Can you open the folder? If so, what are the contents. Note that it is a "system folder", meaning that there may not necessarily be a physical file backing it. This could be the result of a program not being uninstalled cleanly.

Hooked up to the other machine how? What program is giving the error? does Windows see the drive itself (even though it may not mount?).

comment Dual-booting Windows 8 and Ubuntu, have boot error 0xC0000098
Have you tried booting to the recovery partition on your computer? There may be ways to rebuild the BCD there. Also, I seem to remember some ASUS computers come with the original Windows disc. If yours does, maybe have a look at this.

Here's something I found: forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=209045. If your BIOS does not support EFI boot from USB, you might be able to load an EFI environment using an EFI emulator like iBoot.

The Windows DVD can be boot from EFI. You just have to find the right option from your BIOS to do so. You should be able to press a key to choose the boot device, and depending on the manufacturer it could have separate options for EFI and regular. Also check the BIOS to see if you can use EFI for booting from the optical drive.

Try in Ubuntu execute sudo update-grub. It will attempt to find and add all the operating systems it can find. The problem is whether or not you're using the Windows bootloader itself to load Grub. If so, get a Windows disc (or boot to Win RE if it's available), open a command prompt, and type bootrec /RebuildBcd. See support.microsoft.com/kb/927392. You may have to recover the Grub option after doing this.

comment Why Laptops sometimes not shutting down when Lid closed? Red-hot laptop from bag, why?
For some reason that sounds familiar. I had Mac OS X installed on an HP laptop before, and if I run some processing intensive apps more often than not it would instantly die after reaching some temperature. I didn't fix the DSDT yet, so the critical temperature is always prematurely triggered. Maybe most laptops already have this implemented?

Oh yeah, and the lid switch can be flaky. Some switches' ranges are so small if the lid is slightly ajar the computer turns back on. The power button is your best bet.

<Resume from previous> Mobile devices are still fully on after you press the power button, with the CPU speed reduced and some hardware turned off. With a laptop, it's either fully on, on standby (RAM on only), or hibernate. No one quickly pulls out a laptop to check things, and then put it back in their bag or pocket. In either case, it's still implemented with the help of the OS. If your phone is frozen, the power button probably won't respond for many seconds, or at all. If you want a laptop that's like a mobile device, there are places you can find a tablet running Windows x86/64.

Looking back at your question, I see "instant kill". You're comparing a laptop to a mobile device. Laptops are designed to use a lot of power, and generate a lot of heat, if you so choose to have a powerful processor and all the rest of that good stuff. Mobile devices are designed to be mobile, with enough power to get things done but still consuming little energy. <To be continued>
