comment How can I copy my (Ubuntu 9.04) Linux filesystem to another computer?
Boot off a rescue medium so the disk is not in use and then just TAR it over the wire to the new machine. There have to be a half dozen ways to do this (cpio/tar over ssh, to DVD, to USB, etc.). I'm assuming you only want to do it once.

comment How is PNG lossless given that it has a compression parameter?
PNG compression is almost identical to ZIPping files. You can compress them more or less but you get the exact file back when it decompresses -- that's what makes it lossless.

comment YUM root update error
Note that personally I always run yum clean all && yum update yum rpm && yum clean all && yum -y upgrade when doing large update sets. If rpm or yum have bugs, I want those fixed before doing the large update.

comment Accessing mysql behind firewall with ssh port forwarding
@nate that mysql command is the problem; it must connect to localhost (and my suspicion when I asked the question in the first place). I see you've resolved that already below now.

If you add -v to the command, it will show the tunnel establishing (or failing) in the terminal window as well.

What's the mysql command you're running on the local machine after configuring the tunnel?

comment What's the difference between mobile and desktop processors?
Its probably best to understand the difference between any two processors first. What makes an AMD Opteron and an Intel Xeon and an Intel Celeron different? They have slightly different ways of achieving their goals even though they're mostly compatible processors, so people benchmark them to see how they really perform. The same is true of mobile processors.

comment In theory, how would you set up a mechanism by which repeaters/hubs could detect loops and shutdown ports to break the loop?
I agree with MSalters we already have STP that makes this basically irrelevant on intelligent switches.

comment Which remote printing protocol to use?
@hdhondt From speedguide.net/port.php?port=9100 and historical memory, I've always seen it as the HP port. Its listed as either PDL or JetDirect in most places; both of which are HP. It may pre-exist that but I'm not aware of it.

That would be true for "on boot" not "on login" @Ashtray

comment Why do we need /lib in linux in 3.* kernel?
Nothing puts libraries in /lib except for system tools needed to boot the system. Your libraries are installed in /usr/lib* when packaged or /usr/local/lib* when installed manually.

comment Setting home computer as www web server
Look up how to configure your modem's router feature. Set your PC to be in the DMZ if it has that option, as this will simply redirect all unrecognized packets directly to your PC.

comment Joining two ethernet cables: strip and solder or buy an adapter?
Remember that Ethernet loses functionality as you untwist more of the wire. The less untwisted wire, the better.

comment Is it possible to plug 50 webcam on a computer for a 3d scanner?
The hard part will certainly be the software to analyse the data, not the hardware. Also, 50 seems like overkill.

comment Buying new RAM for GT780DXR
Crucial, the company in question, has a compatibility program on their website to check what RAM is compatible with your computer.
