I am currently employed as an IT security consultant. I frequently code in my spare time and have been deeply involved in computing for as long as I can remember (my earliest memories are navigating my full 4 GB hard drive on Windows 95 and thinking, what is all this junk occupying C:\windows\ and taking up room for all my games? Delete!).

I'd like to share my tips and tricks and anything else I've picked up over the years with the StackExchange community, so I look forward to helping!

comment How can I determine which network adapter my browser is using? How can I change it?
Windows networking behaviour is just bizarre. I can ping the address and tracert it to see the connection go the right way, but within the web browser it resolves the address via a totally different route (the same subnet routed to via a different adapter).

comment Make a network computer accessible to Windows by a domain name without DNS?
@Bolli Thanks a lot for this, it's worth investigating. I had thought that NetBIOS was dead after realisation of how insecure it is.

@Bolli Can you elaborate on what you mean by a 'custom network'? It is likely I'll be dealing with on-site technicians who aren't fully aware with how their network has been setup. We're talking about Junior and Infant schools in the UK here, where the necessary tech know-how on managing a domain has been abstracted through something like RM tools, or an off-site engineer looks after complicated aspects (anything beyond adding new user accounts and machines).

comment Is MAC compulsary for a NIC?
It's a requirement for Ethernet, so pretty much yes. I doubt you will be able to get your NIC to function without one set.

comment Is hijacking of Facebook sessions possible when having physical access to a computer?
Generally speaking anything that can be done remotely can be done even more easily with local/physical access. If someone can sneak in and modify your system, they could equally just install a keylogger which would be far more convenient for getting access to your Facebook.
