@BrunoBronosky: I'm not sure. In a (slow) remote terminal, multiple (human) keypresses will be buffered and then sent in one packet; I think the timing information between them is then lost (at least with telnet), and Vim would incorrectly detect those keys as being pasted.

Right, custom chars only work with 'listchars'. To me, the highlighting is more than enough (especially with aggressive colors).
