comment Computer only accesses the internet when using a static DNS ip
Hmmm one clue here was that I had plugged the connected a LAN port of the ZyXEL modem-router with the WAN port of the DD-WRT router. I"ve remedied this, but 192.168.1.1 still directly accesses the ZyXEL.

Re: 'Anothe router in the network'. The ZyXEL is a modem-router.

Thanks for the advice btw - I do need to get my head around various home networking terminology, eg the diffence between a router and an access point, what DCHP is etc...

@sawdust - So how would I use it as a wireless access point?

comment Why do some routers not have a WAN port?
@sawdust - I knew that I needed a VDSL2 modem, which is why I bought the ZyXEL modem. The problem was not realising that I couldn't use the TP-LINK as a wireless access point.

Excellent, thank you. So to answer the question - is it just that this kind of modem router is a cheap 'single use in mind' consumer model?

That's right, I'm wanting to use the TP-LINK router for wireless routing only. Would it be possible to use a RJ11 to RJ45 cable to connect the ZyXEL modem to the TP-LINK router, without losing speed?

Hi - I found the instructions for the other answer easier to follow (step by step numbering), used that and it worked. Cheers.
