comment Is this a safe tool for adding Remote Desktop server to Windows 7 Home?
Unfortunately Green Button has been acquired by Microsoft and the link in this answer now leads to a generic page on Microsoft Community.

comment Are USB sticks a good backup medium?
If using cloud storage, it's not a bad idea to encrypt first. I use BoxCryptor for that purpose. Makes the process pretty much transparent.

comment How do I securely store and manage 180 passwords?
I've been using this for a few years - works great. I store it in a BoxCryptor (free) container on DropBox for additional security, that way I can share the database between my PC and laptop. I also tried it on Linux a few weeks ago (using encFS to open the BoxCryptor container) and that worked fine as well - Linux just didn't like my laptop so that part was short-lived. :\

comment CD to MP3 converter with full control over filenames and folders
+1 I haven't looked back since I started using MediaMonkey. The paid version doesn't have the limitations of the free version and was well worth the price (a lifetime license was actually pretty cheap.) It's also great when you have a large collection of mp3s (I've ripped almost all my CDs, so it's huge.)

You must be a contractor... ;) You should educate your client, rather than comply to an absurdly stupid request.

comment Home network with Windows 7 as router
I agree with Force Flow. I think you'd be wasting your time trying to use a PC as a router.

comment How could I configure firefox to go to previous page like IE does when I hit Backspace?
Hmmm... Works for me, and as far as I know I did not change anything in the configuration to make Backspace do that.

Maybe those who picked the name were Seinfeld fans.

comment Why would my computer automatically restart after “shutdown” and “sleep”?
My PC has a couple of special-purpose USB ports - I can only plug two types of devices (a remote control and an external viewer) in those. Anything else (mouse, microphone, doesn't matter) will almost invariably restart the computer a few seconds after I shut it down. You may want to check your motherboard's manual just in case it has something like that (I have an ASUS P5B Premium Vista Edition - something like that.) It took me a while to realize what was going on. Never had a problem after I left those two ports alone.

The 600Gb Velociraptor is much cheaper when you're not looking at the price for a "20 pack". ;) Newegg.ca sells it for C$289.99.

comment Why are the hard disks on a Windows Home Server always active?
Indexing, virus scan, defragmenting (if you installed such software), WHS duplication, etc... Mine is often active seemingly for nothing, then I look later and it's quiet.

comment How may I use other server features on Windows Home Server without breaking it?
As Randolph pointed out - performance will be a problem. I had some of this stuff running on a more powerful machine (not WHS, but it doesn't matter) and the performance was so-so. If you install all of this you'll most likely bring the machine down to its knees. Those services aren't lightweight.

I also regularly login using remote desktop (almost every day.) The warning is more to help prevent less knowledgeable users from breaking something. +1 for suggesting We Got Served - very good WHS resource where I find most of my WHS answers.

comment What application do you use to play and manage music on your computer?
+1 I tried several music players over the years, and ever since I ran into MediaMonkey, I haven't looked back. Very fast and flexible. I bought a lifetime license (which is rather cheap too...)
