comment Dell laptop recognizes external monitor but does not display
Dell e6430's are known for issues with their own displays; I don't know if maybe they have issues with external ones or not.

comment Missing Boot Menu
Visual BCD Editor is real nice, but it difficult to understand compared to EasyBCD. I have been working on my own USB Boot menu, and the menu is always missing (using EasyBCD), so I used Visual BCD Editor to take a look and can't find anything the matter.

comment Cloning Win7 installation from HDD to HDD
I did exactly this using gParted and this tutorial on HowToGeek: whirlpool.net.au/wiki/GParted It worked just fine. I cloned my HDD from a 250GB \@5400 HDD to a WD Black 750GB \@7200. After I moved the partitions to the new drive, I had to use the Windows Installation disk to perform a boot repair - and I had to run it twice; it did something each time, but not all at once, I suppose. But it worked - took me about two hours to read the tutorial and everything. It helps to have an external USB HDD dock, though!

comment Can I invoke Windows Update from the command line?
There are a number of reasons why Windows Updates might quit working, and a number of solutions, I would be happy to answer, but this is not the right topic... Just suffice to say that in the end, I wanted offline updates and ended up doing this: forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/… which works quite well!
