comment Launched application does not stay on the same desktop
It depends on your window manager, you can set up groups to launch certain apps on certain pre-defined desktops. Another way is to use xnest or xephyr to run a second nested X server on 1+ of your desktops Then launch it with DISPLAY=:1 command args ... and use the -display arg if the command has one, but usually it is enough to export DISPLAY. Also if you have multiple monitors (Xinerama displays) you can use :0.0 or :0.1. Can you give a bit more detaill?

comment uTorrent causes DNS to stop working occasionally
I have had similar issues that resolve by adding a question mark at the end of the url... And redirecting google adware sites to 127.0.0.1 in my etc/hosts ... Speaking of etc/hosts , you can add the actual ip address for the root domains of sites you visit often.

comment Panning screen on eeePc 701 with Ubuntu and Xfce
Maybe I'm mistaken, but doesn't the desktop size need to be larger than the screen resolution for panning to make sense. Did you want virtual desktops instead?

comment Make acpi beep when the power supply being unplugged even if the alsa is turned into mute
I updated with an alternative file to monitor in /proc/acpi ... it would help if you gave a listing of /proc/acpi and more detailed info of your applicable hardware in general (hardinfo will work ).

comment How do I preserve ownership permissions when copying to an external volume?
I don't think this has to do with it being an external volume. More likely it is the file system of the volume (probably fat32 or some other file system that does not support all attributes). tar, cpio and other archiving utilities will preserve attributes if you don't need direct access as do some version control systems

comment Is it possible to change the mount point used for external USB devices from /media to something else under GNOME?
Iirc, it is hard-coded into gvfs. Puppy had patches for Thunar, but not sure about Nautilus.

Do you mean the one @ your boot loader or the linux penguin (or similar) that comes up during boot?
