The op said "maybe using regex". for file names globbing is good enough 99% of the time. Other solutions require tools that may not be available to the shell - for instance, my box doesn't have whereis, while this uses built-ins that will work on nearly all shells - though I should add type $1 to see if it is an alias or function in a bashrc. ${PATH//://*${1}* }*${1}* is substring manipulation, it replaces the ':'s in PATH with a "*[the first arg]*space" the last one is needed because there is no colon on the end, thus grokking it into something for ... in ... can use.

comment Why can't I load a new kernel in? What went wrong?
Not enough info, the options you select makes a huge difference. The messages you get when you try to boot it are necessary. Try using a known working .config and manually updating the initrd (you need find, gzip/zcat, cpio and your old working one and new modules)

comment How can i turn off discrete VGA during boot?
If you are interested, I wrote a script that removes unused kernel modules. Removing them not only prevents loading unwanted modules like broken drivers or unused ports like yenta-socket, but it speeds up booting too. It may not exactly be on topic though.

Can you be more specific. I can "boot" to /bin/sh in about 1st and xvesa + wm + terminal in about 2s, but I get the feeling you would want more than that.
