My work combines risk management, statistics and programming.

  • I am the author of jBloomberg, a high level wrapper around the Bloomberg Desktop Java API wrapper
  • my blog is the result of the combination of those passions.

comment How do I get rid of all caps ribbon titles in Office 2013?
The File menus stay in all caps after running your batch. Great stuff otherwise.

comment How to recover lost source code when typical recovery software does not show Java files?
@com.BOY Or bitbucket if you don't want to share your code with the rest of the world.

In the future, you should use a version control system so that all your machines + a server in the cloud hold all the data.

comment Is there a way to express a complex Excel formula in terms of final (non-formula, value-only) cells?
I think boost pro does that, but I have not tried it and it is not free (there is a free trial though). Not sure if it's available on Mac either (does not look like it).

comment Why do laptops need fans but tablets don't?
I would have thought having a SSD drive vs. a rotating HD would also help reducing heat generation (not to the same extent as the CPU/GPU parts which are the hottest in the box).

comment Can't install Java JRE
Firefox being in 32 bits, you need a 32 bit version of the JRE installed.

comment Excel find bucket without nested IFs
You have inverted the 2 ranges in your formula, it should be =LOOKUP(A1,Z2:Z10,Y2,Y10) - otherwise it works fine, thanks.

Are you on automatic calculation mode: File > Excel Options > Formulas > Calculation options > Automatic?

Same here - very annoying. But probably off topic for SO.

@Excellll absolutely, thanks. That's what happens when you don't test your code / formulae ;-)

comment Date axis with a partial year
Nice try - but Dec-01 appears on the left of the vertical axis which is a bit messy.

@DavidVandenbos Yes precisely. I could do without the first mark (Feb-02) if it makes it easier, but the first interval would still be 10 months.

comment How can I create matrices of data in Excel?
Not sure I understand what you are asking. It seems the numbers in the "Column index" column are irrelevant. You basically create a row with x,y,z,p ordered by their "Row Index", then copy that row 4 times, is that it?

I don't think this is possible without using vba...
