Thanks for the list. Know of any way to make the image bootable from a partition (Without a disc)?

I'm a software guy too, so I'm not an expert by any means. I'd have to assume the difference is the same as uATX to ATX... A few inches smaller in size.

The only catch is, you may need to find a MOBO that is somewhat similar, and not much of an upgrade... They won't allow you to transfer on a upgrade. I'm not sure what their stance is on obsolete tech.

"This makes life difficult because the copy of Vista is an upgrade, tied to the copy of XP which shipped on the Gateway, which is OEM and won't install on the new box." Microsoft has a stipulation... Upgrades are tied to the OS they upgrade, and OEMs are tied to the MOBO... If the MOBO dies, phone Microsoft, and a lot of times they'll allow it to be transferred to a new MOBO, and the upgrade will still work fine on the transferred OEM. As for whether you need to reinstall for a new CPU, They should be Plug and Play.

comment Triple vs. Dual Channel with 6 sticks of memory
+1 for the "Dual channel kits simply bypassed this as they "guarantee" compatibility." statement. If the sticks are the same, they can do Dual and Triple channel.

comment Is it okay for a new laptop battery to report 90% capacity?
Though a different question, read the quote from the first answer... It seems pretty relevant. Is it better to use laptop on battery or on ac power?

comment Mixing DDR2 module sizes
I'd just go to 3Gb, then upgrade to 4Gb as soon as you can. 32 bit Windows will only use a little over 3Gb, but the Dual Channel is helpful, and it isn't really a waste, since the kernel still gets to access the additional RAM for hardware/BIOS stuff.

Not a severe penalty, but in order to have Dual Channel, both sticks need to be nearly identical (Size and speed). Mostly what you'll be losing out on is the additional bus bandwidth. It's nice, but its your choice if you want 3Gb or faster 2Gb or 4Gb. DDR2 is cheap these days.

comment How do I format and reinstall Vista without having the original OEM disc?
Just on a side note, I recently downloaded a 9-in-1 XP disc that allows me to have all forms of XP on a single disc, making it so I don't need to have a whole bundle of discs when I do work for my friends. So long as you use something like "Magical JellyBean Keyfinder" that tells you their current windows install type and their license key, I just write down the key, install that particular type, then re-use their key. Microsoft won't complain, because it's on the same motherboard, and using the correct license.

Actually, what your paying for from Microsoft is the license. The plastic is just that... Plastic. Feel free to download a disc, just make sure you use the correct one (i.e. OEM, Retail, Enterprise, etc.), and don't use any "Generated" keys that come with a torrent. So long as you own a key that you payed for, you own the product (for a single motherboard... License is per computer).

Thanks! At least when Windows 7 comes out I won't be stuck doing the same thing again. Sucks being the only technical person you know. Thanks again Molly!

Does vLite work for Windows 7? It looks like it's only for Vista.

comment Reboot loop after Windows XP Service Pack 3 update
I'd have to go with your drivers suggestion. For a blue screen to happen after a windows update, it would most likely be a problem between hardware and software, more so than a software error.

comment a windows keyboard macro recorder that is FAST to use?
Though it may take a tiny bit of additional work, AHK also has an easy to use GUI creator. You could make a macro, create a hotkey to bring up a GUI, and get the GUI to display all the macros you've created... Other than that, I don't believe that there is a built-in way... It's actually a small scripting language more than it is a standalone application with macro features. It's a give or take thing... It isn't limited to any application, but it requires you to do some very easy to learn scripting to make up for it.
