Yep, seems like there was some crazy characters in the file. I rewrote it and now it works fine. Thanks!

I tried it, but it turned tabs into spaces, which I don't want. And the newlines are still there.

My gedit is not using spaces, only tabs.

It didn't work. Now it says 'INSERT (paste)' but the pasted text looks the same. I'm copying text from gedit, then pasting into vim.

Should this work fine even if the partition was encrypted? I didn't have /dev/sda, I had /dev/dm-0. I used that and everything seemed to work. But then I rebooted and got locked out, couldn't go past through the 'enter passphrase:' prompt. That was without removing the old disk in virtualbox. When I removed the old disk, I just got something like 'no bootable disk found!' (also tried moving the new one to port 0). (don't worry, it was a test vm)

comment Proper way for changing MAC address in a linux VM?
@Paul I'm trying to learn how different programs track your activity, how to do it, and how to avoid it. Eg: IP, cookies, browser fingerprinting, etc. Now I want to see how some programs respond to a MAC address change.

I used the first solution (setuid), because I need it to be executed automatically after logging in, without asking for a password. And I don't like removing the password from sudo. Also, I might need that the script be executed by non sudoers

@Stephanie I must be doing something wrong, because all this looks too crazy for a common task. This is what I'm trying to do: serverfault.com/questions/401405/…
