To clarify the DNS lookups on the host are working fine - it's only the Virtualbox guest that is affected.

I have kind of an odd use case. I have a specific reason why I want to access the guest OS as a share in Windows. If I just wanted to copy files back and forth, you're right, VirtualBox shared folder is WAY easier.
