@MariusMatutiae And yet, I still very much appreciate you spending the time to criticize the whole process.

@KevinPanko Looking at the contents of the id_rsa.pub, the file had the credentials I expected (root@...); so I don't think it's that. Regardless, echo ${HOME} outputs "/root", as does cd ; pwd in the su shell.

@OliverSalzburg You're quite right about the sudo su; cd; I actually entered the two commands not on one line, but only cut and pasted the ssh-keygen lines.

@OliverSalzburg I wasn't clear; I want the root account on the Ubuntu machine to have access to the 'jamie' account on the remote, not 'root'.

@VISQL Well, I did write that I paid for my version, though didn't specify what (Home and Student) in my original post; so I wouldn't be using a "Free" version of anything. And I'd agree, a purchased version of MS OFfice shouldn't be web dependant, but in my case it is.

comment replace nth occurence of string in each line of a text file
It seems every problem I have with text manipulation, I manage to solve with sed. I'm not sure I should be thanking you for making sed even more useful to me, but I will anyway. ;)

So vga=XXX specifies /dev/fb0? or would I use vga=/dev/fb?
