Alrighty...

I'm Primarily a hardware geek. This doesn't mean I have a ton of hardware around me, and that I spend the equivalent of a small country's GNP on new toys. I'm a computer repair technician who doesn't shy away from needing to break out my soldering iron.

I'm Primarily a Windows guy, because all my customers use it. Yes, I know. There are a ton of repair techs who use Linux on their own... and so do I. I just try to keep myself surrounded by a few running versions of Windows, because I inevitably get a call once a day from someone with a question that may require me to lean over to said running machine, and confirm a detail. It makes it easier to answer XP questions when I've got a machine running MCE and one running Home within reach. Running... not waiting to be booted. I keep a copy of Vista (shudder) around because I need to, but I only fire up that boot at gunpoint. The Laptop runs Mint and I like it like that.

Opinionated and decisive, I am well aware that I don't know everything. That won't stop me from being confident in what I do know, and looking up that which I don't.

comment Difference between Product Key and Serial Number
@Keltari years ago, I had a job with Dollar Rent-a-Car, and we got a New Yorker in, and the key for it also started one of the Chrysler mini-vans. And Product Keys are tied to a licence AND a product. I never said they were tied to a single Serial Number

@EBGreen While I agree that the bar code on tuna isn't unique to that can of tuna alone, the analogy is not Serial Number = Bar Code. The Analogy is Serial Number = Public Identifier on Product. Which, on a can of tuna, is the bar code.

comment How do these characters (%25u, %25U) in a URL, pose a security risk?
it might be slightly broader... I found this github.com/arnemart/SafariKeywordSearch/issues/13 where %25u is used in a Youtube search to force a search for a Japanese text character, via the hex code for the Unicode version of the Japanese text... and %25u is what the search string needs to decode the hex

comment Can not copy files from old CD's into new system
CDs will degrade over time, and the cheaper the CD, the faster they will degrade. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_rot ... don't assume that 8 years is too short. All that said, even if you manage to copy the disc using a utility, what are you going to do with the corrupted data?

comment Windows 7 activation on a MacBook Pro — valid product key is “not valid”
This isn't an answer, so I'm putting it here. What does the DVD itself say? Is it an authentic Windows DVD? Does it say on it that it is an OEM installer, or a Retail installer? Is it a label that was printed and stuck on the disc? Could you provide a picture of the actual disc? (not the product key sticker of course) It is possible that although you purchased it off Amazon, it was not legitimate. Have you contacted the company who sold it to you through Amazon? An OEM product key will work with an OEM installer of the SAME version, if the product key has never been activated before.

comment No video signal at boot with custom built computer
@DavidSchwartz I'm with you, most definitely... but it is common for people to assemble a system from the components they purchased, before they test them. Not necessarily good, but common.

comment How do I make the same crop from two images in photoshop?
I'd do a variation on this, almost the same. Just wouldn't involve cropping specifically. Same deal. Start with the first image, add the second image in a new layer. Use transparency to confirm the images are aligned. Create the selection area, but instead of cropping, copy the area from the first layer and paste it into a new image. Then using that same selection area, change to the other layer, copy and paste that into another new image.
