comment Diagnosing disk i/o errors, failing disk controllers
Pretty much what I was going to advise - but I would strongly recommend memtest86+ - write to a CD, then boot from the disk and run.

comment Can I login into domain under regular Windows 8 (not Pro)?
@DaveM - The OP states 'I don't mean joining the Windows domain, just accessing the shared folders/printers.'

@DaveM - Yes, he cannot join the domain but he can access shared folders/printers, albeit not as easily as if the PC were joined to the domain.

comment Many BSODs - where to look for the explanation?
The next two logical steps are to test the RAM in another rig, and/or test different RAM in your rig. You could argue that you should use the onboard graphics temporarily to remove the PSU load of the discreet card, if you want to reduce the likelihood of the PSU being a factor. Note: does your Mobo say anything specific about which RAM slots should be used in which combinations - sometimes they can be very specific.

I haven't discounted a PSU problem - but that rig, including the gfx card, will draw less than half of what that PSU can deliver - approx 300W (peak). Of course, the problem could be quality of supply rather than quantity. If the OP has the resources, swapping out other components should prove/disprove this.

comment How to add new application to run from command prompt
Putting something in the system root folder would work (because this folder is included in the PATH environment variable) but it isn't a sensible solution - you don't want to clog up your \Windows folders with non-OS files.

comment Why is my disk at 99% usage here?
You don't have much room to manoeuvre in 128GB... perhaps you can splash out on a 240GB replacement? Not the solution you are hoping for but, even if you clear 10GB out, you use it up in no time and you'll forever be battling with it.

comment Wifi network undetectable on a Lenovo G470
I had a similar problem with a Z570, after refreshing the copy of Windows, the wifi adapter could not see the router. I never got a resolution - but I had a tiny USB wifi adapter on hand so I continue to use that.

comment How to find the source of the low on memory error. Windows 8.1
In this case, it was a problem with a certain range of ATI cards (Radeon HD5xxx-HD7xxx ranges)... AMD were adamant that the problem was with the game (or possibly OpenGL/DirectX/etc), but it was clearly with something low-level. Having upgraded my gfx card, I thankfully no longer have the problem, but it was never actually resolved.

comment Pressing v key enters CTRL-V and vice versa in Windows 8
Thanks for the effort - I should have made it clear that it was only the V key that was a problem and not any other combinations.

comment Whats the best windows explorer add in for Skydrive?
I was actually on about the app for other Windows OSes: apps.live.com/skydrive/app/9a65e47d-606a-4816-a246-90f54bf7a3ea. But as it happens, I've had Win 8 Pro on one laptop for nearly 3 weeks, running Skydrive (seems to be OK, albeit with little use so far).

My experience with this app isn't great. On 3 different machines and crashes usually on 2 out of the 3 and occasionally on the third.

@Mark - can you have another crack at an answer. There are plenty of people with this problem, myself included. It would be worth having your solution on here.

comment Is there an exhaustive list of what Windows logs or can log?
@TomWijsman - Substitute 'impossible' for 'Unlikely, difficult to be comprehenisve'. And Windows Server is part of the Windows family you included in your tags.

comment Can I install Microsoft Visual Web Developer w/o a SQL Server Express installation?
This has been a big bug-bear for me - it amazes me the quantity and scale of some of the supposed dependencies that WPI comes up with. In this case, it wanted to instal SQL Express AND SQL Compact Edition along with various bolt-ons and updates - none of which were needed.

@nhinkle - That's fair enough. It's a good product - it's a shame the publishers couldn't just accept the recommendation without abusing it.
