comment Why does pinging 192.168.072 (only 2 dots) return a response from 192.168.0.58?
@LarsH just saw this QA and 1st thing I saw was 072 and "58" being an octal to dec conversion. The big long answer just explains skipping the 3rd octet.

comment Command line tool to search phrases in large number of pdf files
I tried the Acrobat indexing tool and calling it primitive is a compliment. recoll installed on debian handily, now trying to make it usable for my windows-based employees.

comment Weird cursor on second display only
Awesome. I changed up my monitors so side one is portrait flipped and there were artifacts (lines showing up) under the mouse pointer. Unticking enable shadow fixed it for me. Thanks!

comment How to fix warning about ECDSA host key
@bgoodr it's my opinion & solely based upon setting up my own RAID fileserver several times over the past few years. :/ Crap for answer, but start googling ubuntu debian server and you'll see what I mean.

Good points, I edited the question.

comment Why doesn't it matter which ports I use on a switch?
So from the outside, all the ports look the same however only a subset support QoS? My question intentionally didn't get into management features. + I'm not playing musical chairs; my VoIP boxes stay on their two ports forever.

+1 this is what I'm asking for! I can imagine advantage to grouping within a module.

comment What differences are there between “home” switches and “professional” switches?
+1 I just replaced generic CAT5 cables in my rack with purpose made CAT6 cables and noticed improvement in performance.

comment How to setup VLAN on same subnet as Ethernet
This Q/A made me go read. eth0.10 is a VLAN, as linux can handle 802.11q. (See wiki.ubuntu.com/vlan) I was confusing this with eth0:1, etc, is a virtual interface, which allows the same NIC to have multiple IP addresses.

Didn't work for me on newly install Debian server at work when SSHing in from home. Also, answer is pretty terse.

comment Copy entire file system hierarchy from one drive to another
Genius, thank you. Btw, I ended up using rsync -avxHAWX --numeric-ids --progress / mnt/ but I should have done rsync -avxHAWX --numeric-ids --progress / mnt/ > ~/rsync.out. I suspect pouring the output to the terminal slowed the process. :D

comment My first home network setup with a wireless router and switch
FWIW, I proved to myself 10/100 might be slower than cable modem service serverfault.com/questions/564410 imho, it is worth upgrading everything touching the ethernet to Gigabit speed.

comment Crimping CAT6 cables results in lower bandwidth than expected
From my experience, with a quality crimping tool (mine is the ratcheting type), 5e vs 6 doesn't make a difference. Further, I have a lot of CAT6 cable & I've built runs with 5e and 6 jacks & haven't noticed a difference in performance. I do look to ensure the ends of the conductors are near the wall of the plug. I've found often it takes 2 tries to get them perfect, so I shove in like I'm going to crimp, pull the cable out, retrim the wires, and repeat.

comment Is anybody aware of an application that does what FreeMyPDF.com does (frees 'secured' PDFs)
@ekaj imho, when I ask a question, I always appreciate answers based on experience. I recall when I was googling for it, there were hundreds of choices. I don't even remember why I chose the one I did, I'm just glad I was happy with it -- and happy enough to see this question and try to help.
