comment Is it better to have 2x 48 port switches or 4x 24 port switches in a network?
@Hennes - my plan was to connect them with a single network cable, but as davidPostill pointed out i will probably now connect them direct to the router, unless there is another option. They are managed switches, im not sure about backbone, but from my experience of purchasing netgear switches with STP they tend to be pretty high up their product line up so i would think so. Also regarding cable lengths this is going into a residential property c. 3500sqft so i would think the max cable length would be <100 meters, would that be an issue ?

Thanks @jcbermu - re. the latency if im connecting devices such as printers (requires access to local network) and smart tvs (requires access to internet for Netflix etc) would you think there might be a scenario where these where effected by latency, ie. they wouldn't preform their primary functions correctly ?

comment Is there a downside to configuring a modem to use a dynamic IP when it has a static IP from the ISP?
I guess its a static ip becuase my ip address is written on the contract with the provider Dedicated ip : xxxxxx, is there such a thing as a dynamic ip on a 2 yr lease (the length of the contract) ?

comment analyizing why wifi / internet connection is slow
When you say "What technology are you using exactly?" - am i correct in thinking your referring to router / modem, rather than devices. We are using a BT 2wire 2700hgv (which is supplied by the network BT) - although ive also got a netgear range max dgnd3300v2 which i could use if it helped

comment Website that is blocked at router / modem level still accesable
thanks ill check this out next time im connected to that router and let you know, the other option is that i might connect a netgear router coming out of our combi modem/router and get everyone to connect to that as that has more advanced blocking features.

@Ashtray - Just tried it now as well as adding http://twitter.com, same problem still goes through i think it may have something to do with the fact that it redirects to https://twitter.com although that is blocked also

comment Speeding up ping
You mentioned torrents, we run Google Drive quite extensively (which i suppose is a long stream but not very wide) and we also sync between machines using dropbox do you think either of those could be causing the problem ?
