comment Why is my CPU fan so loud?
It's probably not, frankly. I have a CPU of that generation, and it sounds like a small vacuum cleaner...And that's clean. If it's dusty?

comment How do I verify a backup?
+1: You have to do a restore. After you've done the restore, then you can compare the original with the restored version. If they're the same, then it worked. (You can use a free tool like Guiffy to do the compare.)

You need to provide some hardware specific information because this is a hardware specific problem.

comment How can I install DropBox without root privileges?
+1: As a clarification: If it depends on anything that you don't have access to, you can install that in your home directory, that's what ~quack was saying. So lack of root isn't a deal breaker, but it can mean hours of manually compiling dependencies.

comment On Solaris, can I alias one command to multiple possible locations?
+1: Exactly what I came in here to say. Bin directories are a good place to store commands anyway; rather than putting your script directory in the path, you might want to put links to your script commands in the bin directory...But that's a personal preference.

comment Which service should I make mine dependant on?
The task scheduler is a piece of crap. I wouldn't depend on it for anything. You're much better of just putting it in the start up items, or some other hack, than depending on the task scheduler.

Yep. Folder count is attached to the file system, not the OS.

It's just not a lightweight application, I'm afraid. I've experienced some of the troubles you're talking about, and I just broke down and got a faster machine.
