comment What is Firefox favorites physical location?
Physical location? Most likely on a spinning platter inside a metal casing, screwed into a drive bay, inside your tower next to where your sitting right now. .... sorry couldn't resist.

@OldPro Ah hadn't considered that. That would explain exactly what is happening. Any reason ACLS would be that badly broken, fixes?

OK That would mostly make sense, if it was failing a little and doing lots of error correcting. I would have thought the SMART data would be more definitive with problems like that but hey ho. I've updated my question with something I found last night that I'm not sure fits.

Yeh I can understand It would lock up a system while running but on boot I thought windows wouldn't need to access it besides polling if it's there or not.

Yes I did very early on when the drive was popping up sporadically in windows and all returned fine apart from it saying it fixed a couple of bad sectors, but that was evident from the SMART data saying that there were reallocations.

@Psycogeek Yeh a spare interal SATA port is all i'm lacking to test, got no spare desktops only a couple of available laptops. So I can't really rule out a bad motherboard in theory, except my other internal disk works.

Yup, WD had a stern email from me and an RMA request as the disk is only 6 months old and was an RMA for a previous crapped out drive. Both issued before the Thailand flooding and therefore not affected by the disaster.

Windows boots from a separate drive. When it did pop up in windows and I got to run some simple self test, everything came back fine.

Seems a little oxymoronic I know but not knowing what specifically went wrong with the drive means I've no idea why Windows is a failure. :p

@MadBoy It's worth the 50 bounty to me to get somewhat of an explanation. I've updated the body with a more definitive question. And I'll give UBCD a go, had forgotten all about that old hero.

Thanks I'll give it a go see if it can be saved, but as of right now windows won't even boot with it plugged in.
