comment Display list of computers on a LAN in Linux
"Get nmap. It's the program Trinity used in The Matrix" - that's good enough for me, installing..

comment Does Chrome's Download Manager resume downloads if the connection is lost or closed?
I did the same as Sathya (except I didn't switch off my wifi.. if you get my drift) and Chrome was unable to resume the download, simply marking it as complete with no option to resume. Sorry.

comment What is the rationale behind safely removing USB media from windows PCs?
What we need is a flash drive that can physically hook itself into the USB port with little clamps and not let go (even if the user is trying to pull it out) until it's ready.

I lost time (but not data) once like this. The file never made it over to the flash drive because I was in a hurry. Never happened again, though, I guess caching is not very common.

Has MNG ever actually been used? I have not encountered it once outside its Wikipedia page.

@Alfo Think about a live broadcast, you don't need to know the length to watch it, and in fact you don't know the length, since you presumably don't know (nor need to know) when the broadcast ends. That's the point. Some things just don't have a length until they have actually ended.

comment Does heat damage computers while turned off?
200 degrees (celsius) is highly optimistic. I'd say more like 90-100 degrees for a CPU, and 120 for a GPU (which is typically a bit more resistant to heat).

comment Why is my computer really slow despite having a considerable amount of free memory?
@BlueRaja All memory optimizers do is push everything to the swap file, forcing you to page everything back in the instant you start using your computer again. So all it does is give you a warm fuzzy feeling of "aww, I use only 300MB of memory" then wait 5 minutes for your system to recover. In other words, they are disrupting the system's caching process on purpose for no reason. Don't use them.

comment Does a computer use more electricity when charging USB devices?
And that controller chip power is used regardless of whether a flash drive is plugged in or not, so it doesn't even factor in :)

I should note I still get disconnected from time to time, but it's gotten very rare (every other day or so) and is always fixed by plugging out the dongle and plugging it back in, and re-entering the above commands (make it a script in init.rc). Also, if the network won't go back up, go in the Network Manager, open your wireless settings and hit "Save" without changing anything. For some reason it works after doing that.

comment Why do my OSes only recognize 3 GiB of RAM?
@JamesTheAwesomeDude I see. I knew BIOS had limits on accessible memory but I had no idea it could be so low (for instance my mobo has max 32GB). That kind of sucks.. sounds like upgrade time :)
