comment Blinking white cursor while booting
It might be that not only the order affects the result, but also the fact that your old HDD still had the old boot record on it. In that case for your old configuration, BIOS was loading HDD first, and when Windows boot loader took over, it had to spend some time to figure out which hard drive you'd like to actually boot from. When you swapped the disks and made SSD to be the first bootable drive, then it was less confusing for Windows bootloader, so it stopped "doing more stuff" which previously led to that blinking cursor. But that's just my guess from some experience.

comment Search via all Skype history
Thanks for the links to 3rd party tools. I find that search in Skype itself is lame - some older time periods in the chat sometimes are collapsed and Skype ignores them when searching. I have to scroll through the chat first and expand all collapsed periods and only then I can find some text which was previously hidden in one of those collapsed periods.

comment How is access denied on Avira file ipmgui.exe?
If you want to change ACL of ipmgui.exe to get rid of ad popups, it might be a short term solution - next time Avira might update it readjust ACL as it needs. A more clever solution is to add ipmgui.exe to Windows firewall forbidden apps - thus it won't be able to receive advertisements from its web site and should keep silent. I have heard that it works, but I'm not sure if it is permanent.

For me, this did not help. I have tried many options and none of them worked: answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/…

comment Why do damaged hard drives freeze the entire system?
I guess, we would need async hardware with async drivers and async OS kernel to be able to show a message like "Please wait, trying to read data from your disk, and it seems to take more than expected" instead of freezing entire system.

comment Cannot set 1360x768 resolution for DVI connection; VGA works fine only if EDID is disabled
Unfortunately it is not possible to configure both resolutions in Catalyst or on the monitor itself. I can configure only Desktop resolution which I set to 1360x768 and then I expect Catalyst to pass this resolution directly to the monitor. But it does so only in VGA and only with EDID disabled. In any other mode (DVI or VGA with EDID) Catalyst takes control over both resolutions. At least now Catalyst scales to 1920x1080, but some days before it was scaling to 1400x1050 and I could not change it. Still its strange that it's impossible to set the monitor to its 1360x768 in DVI mode.

comment How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup
Unfortunately that EDID option is available only for VGA. I have a similar issue with DVI - Catalyst thinks that my monitor does not support 1360x768 and enables GPU scaling which makes everything look blurred. Only on VGA the image is crisp even at 1360x768, but I have to uncheck that EDID box, or else Catalyst GPU scaling kicks in again and makes things blurry.

comment Cannot set 1360x768 resolution for DVI connection; VGA works fine only if EDID is disabled
The difference between DVI with GPU scaling and VGA with monitor scaling is noticeable, even I with my poor vision see the blurryness when GPU scaling kicks in. 1366x768 is different and it is not officially supported on my monitor. I can set it in desktop properties, but my monitor always reports 1360x768, as expected from its specifications. Both 1360x768 and 1366x768 are specified in WXGA standard: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

comment Can multiple Windows 7 Enterprise PCs use the same product key?
The problem is with predetermined number of allowed activations; this number is based on Volume Licensing agreements. I have MSDN BizSpark subscription and I can't find the limit of my Windows 10 MAK key anywhere. I've read that for MAK keys even reinstalling on the same PC with the same hardware affects the remaining activations count, while Retail keys can be activated without limits on the same hardware, but I'm not sure if this is true. I guess, time will tell - if MAK key stops working, I can use the Retail one. Or vice versa.

comment How long will a Solid-State-Drive (SSD) keep its data while not in use?
@h22 But it's not clear, if the warranty implies that you can write data to your SSD, then keep it for ten years without attaching to any power source and then retrieve your data intact. I haven't read the warranty of my SSD (who has?) but now I think that there might be some small print notice about "using the disk in normal conditions" or something like that.

comment Use OneDrive as additional backup location
I found one limitation and a suggested fix for the WebDAV solution. Quoting the author of the idea: "The WebDAV Redirector has a default max file size of 50MB, but that can be changed; see the 'WebDAV Redirector Registry Settings' section of the following article: iis.net/learn/publish/using-webdav/using-the-webdav-redirector " I intend to try this myself today.

comment Why does my PC slow down to a crawl when VMware and ntoskrnl.exe is writing to a data drive?
Well, I already know what, why and how is using my hard disk. I just don't understand why my system gets so slow while the disk is being used, considering that Windows and all the applications are located on another, much faster SSD drive and the PC has plenty of free RAM. But thanks for the link, I'll see if that xperf provides some more clues to find out what's going on.

I've had this issue even before I migrated my system to SSD. Still, I don't see why my PC performance is affected so badly while I'm writing to the other drive (Seagate ST31000528AS), which is not the one with Windows and applications.

comment Sync Google Drive when not logged in
I tried this on Windows 8, but no luck - when I run the scheduled task, googledrivesync.exe flashes for a moment and quits without syncing the folder. No errors in logs and the task itself still has Running status.

comment Why unrelated files get corrupted after a blue screen of death caused by audio drivers?
Your answer explains experience my friend had when he just migrated to Windows XP. He had an older system drive - FAT32 formatted and a new data drive - NTFS formatted. One day power went off for a moment. Later when the PC booted, FAT32 system was intact, no errors on scandisk. NTFS was corrupted. We were shocked that the new NTFS system could not survive the power outage.

comment Broken dropdowns in SQL Server Configuration Manager on Windows 8.1
I think in my case the problem is not related to DPI because I'm running it on a virtual machine with 1366x768 resolution and DPI setting is on 100%.

Oh, thanks for the hint. I imagined that Management Console will show only it's own version number but there is it: SQL Server Configuration Manager, Microsoft Corporation, Version: 2011.0110.2100.060

comment Broken dropdowns in SQL Server Configuration Manager on Windows 8.1
Currently resolution is 1366x768 and I haven't changed any other settings, I left them as they were "out of the box" but I'm not sure what VMWare video drivers did to the system. I asked some of my work colleagues and two of them reported the same problem. In one case it's on Windows 7 64 bit, but this person says that some months ago he didn't have the issue. Maybe some Windows or SQL Server update broke it....

I'm not sure how to find the version of the configuration manager. It was installed with MS SQL Server 2012 with SP1 (full server version number is 11.0.3128.0).
