comment Does a computer use more electricity when charging USB devices?
This is totally misleading. It does not matter if you need 4 or 6 Watts of power input, the answer to the question is always yes. There is not a single power supply where the efficiency jumps by orders of magnitude if 5 Watts are additionally drawn. Look at your own graph, over a range of 1000 Watts a mere 17% change in efficiency has been measured.

comment Task manager in Windows 7 fails to record “bytes received”
That the wireless NIC fails to count correctly might be the reason. I did not record seeing this behavior on any computer via normal ethernet. Maybe it is also the driver of this specific wireless NIC. At the moment it is just annoying so I won't buy another NIC just to test this theory.

comment Task manager in Windows 7 fails to record “bytes received”
I opened the Task Manager before starting the download. The screenshot shows the download progress after a few MB already transferred. Now after the 100 MB file is completely downloaded "Bytes received" says 454. The Task Manager was open and running the whole time.

comment What's the quickest way to count the number of each character in a file?
@adavid: 1.1GB/s versus 20MB/s is not much faster? I see a factor of 55 between the two solutions.

This is very nice and shows that depending on the data investing a bit into the program is well worth the effort.

comment What are the functions of the BIOS while the operating system is running?
Are you really sure about this? What about the fan controls, the already mentioned system management mode, the whole ACPI, which for example controls processor speed?

This is only true for the Windows Run dialog, in cmd.exe and powershell only 1. through 4. are used, see also boot13's comment.
