comment ssh without using the user's default shell
When you say you tried writing a custom subsystem, it sounds like you configured one in sshd_config, but didn't actually write the necessary source code within a custom sshd binary to support it, correct? My hazy recollection from working on a project forked from OpenSSH is that actual coding and recompling is required, not just configuration.

comment Can't rm or cd into directory
Crashplan is still running; you need to stop it before you can delete a directory it is using.

comment Cannot enter Sudo password when controlling Linux Mint with Synergy
Have you tried opening a simple text editor on the Mint box, and seeing if you can enter your password there without issue? Some special characters might not be making it through, and it would be the easiest way to tell if the password is getting sent correctly or not....

comment Windows 8 folder to folder sync software
DirectSync is not part of the free product. The free sync provided by Cubby requires space in their cloud, also not free, past 5gb.

comment Hard Drive not recognised by BIOS and no visible damage on PCB
It is unlikely that you would be able to see any fault with the naked eye, beyond a blown capacitor. A chip that has been fried by a static charge is not going to look any different than a functional one.

comment usb cable identification/use
What does windows 7 have to do with a USB cable? The cable doesn't care what operating system it is plugged into.

comment What is PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) in Linux?
PAM isn't a daemon that is running, so much as a series of library calls that any daemon can make when it wants to authenticate a connection.
