I'm a software developer and inveterate geek (like many here, I suspect). For work I use so many tools I usually can't remember them all, but C, Java/J2EE, scripting (unix shell + others) and release engineering tools figure heavily in the list.

comment Scroll shell output with mouse in tmux
This results in an odd behaviour where, when I scroll back to the command line, I get an extra character inserted into the CLI, which usually results in my first command being malformed. It's pretty annoying.

comment How to fix ERR_UNSAFE_PORT error on Chrome when browsing to unsafe ports
Adding command line flags on the mac is a pain in the ass; if you add them to the app bundle they often get nuked in upgrades.

This answer is excellent... for Windows. It won't solve the problem for (for example) Mac.

comment How can I change the subject of messages on an Exchange server automatically?
My problem is that I'm "behind" Exchange here; I have only client level access to it. So, I can only do the things that an MUA can do, not an MTA.

comment What is causing the atrocious performance of my Macbook pro?
@JD Guzman: I don't know, that's the thing; by the time any diagnostic tools have started running, the incident is passed; when it's happening, I see >1s lag for simple keystroke responses.

comment What is causing the atrocious performance of my Macbook pro?
I/O turns up nothing. My processor usage hovers below 15% per core, spiking when (as happened just a moment ago) my text entry starts to lag. I'm looking into the Disk Utility steps now.

No, it's not completions that are an issue

I was hoping for a more elegant solution, but this clearly works.

comment How can I identify which application is responsible for my battery life being short?
@Connor Macbook Air, latest model. Projected battery life is ~ 3.5h, instead of 7-11

comment How can I identify which application is responsible for my battery life being short?
Reviews of the MBA have indicated that routine usage actually provides better than advertised battery life. ex: osxdaily.com/2010/10/30/macbook-air-2010-battery-life I'm not saying I'm expecting this, and it's also not relevant to my question; I'm not interested in "is this okay?" I'm interested in "what's the cause of this?"

Right. RHEL 5 + Compiz -> no go.

Actually, that comment counts as an answer, I guess. "No" is still an answer :)

... although the specific requirement to handle private nntp servers isn't addressed in that other question, now that I look at it. Reconsider?

That has the same effect as my second attempt, above. No go, sadly.

Term has its own set of issues, starting with some interesting interactions with my extant set of bashrc tweaks.

comment How do I fix my colour bash prompt wrapping?
That provides a partial fix; the line length is detected properly now, but it doesn't fix the problem with the first line wrap writing over the prompt.
