comment Hard drive failed – what can I do now?
+1 for both the Linux solution and the Spinrite suggestion. Both methods have saved my bacon more than once on hard drives that had apparently failed.

comment DVD drive not recognized
It would be beneficial if we knew what model of mobo you have, that way we could look up the user's manual. I had a mobo a while back that wouldn't recognize two of the SATA ports unless the mobo was sat to AHCI/RAID mode and didn't realize it until I decided to Read The (Fine) Manual. :)

comment Why can I only find 9GB of data on a drive with 144GB used?
You said you did a scan for errors. Did you actually use CHKDSK from the command line or did you use the error-checking utility built into Windows? I seem to have better luck with the former actually being able to repair disk problems over the latter.

+1 for a great suggestion. It may not be Visio, but you can't beat the price!

comment What other formats can i put word documents into? Please help!
+1 for PDF format. I would suggest submitting the CV as PDF as well as having a web-formatted version available in HTML format. Be sure to put a note in the PDF that the document is also available at your website and provide the URL. As for the Save As > PDF functionality in Word 2k7, skip it and use PDF Creator or some other PDF virtual printer. Word's export tools are flaky at best and at worst will totally mangle the formatting.

comment Windows Installer using usb drive for temp purposes
I believe you're on to something with the "using the largest available free space" edit. My experience is totally anecdotal, but I added a terabyte HDD to my Windows 7 box shortly after I installed the OS. The very next day it ran Windows updates. I hadn't put any files on the new drive yet and after the reboot I found a bunch of temp files stashed there.
