comment Is it safe to download and burn a disc image on an infected PC?
Thinking about it from a use-case and turnaround aspect, if I were writing malware, only a fraction of a fraction of a percent of infections, if any, would actually run through this scenario. I think you're just fine.

comment Make IE stop asking me to install adobe flash player
@tjmoore I know this is late, but flash is (was) commonly use(d) for initiating sockets, managing the clipboard, etc. - things the Javascript API should do but don't (didn't). Flash was that bridging technology, and while you didn't see a flashing advertisement for russian brides, it's very likely you were using some of flashes functional capability as an extension to the site.

comment OS equivalent of cookies
Everyone is saying it depends on the OS - this is blatantly false. It depends on the game's implementation. Sometimes, configuration files are stored in the installation directory. Sometimes, they stored in your appdata or home directory. Sometimes, they're stored in the registry (on windows). Sometimes, they stored in some random place you'll never find other than to monitor the process' file handles.

comment mklink error: Cannot create a file when that file already exists
This seems like a bug on Microsoft's part, but this answer is actually correct. When you link C:\foo to E:` for instance, E:\foo` must exist to cd into C:\foo; however, when you do cd, you're placed into E:` -- **not** E:\foo`. Thanks for pointing this out, I would have never figured it out.

comment Graphics freeze whenever hard drive is accessed
yes I have tried disk checking; nothing came up. I may end up replacing the card or testing with a field replacement to see if it is, indeed, the card.
