I am a student at Utah State University where I study Computer Science with a Digital Systems emphasis. My interests include Computer Architecture and Hardware, Digital Design, Systems Programming, Microcontroller Development, UNIX and Linux, Concurrent and Parallel Programming, Operating System hardware and software design. My preferred programming language for most tasks is C, followed by Python. I am president of the Free Software and Linux Club at USU.

When he says non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM) he is referring to a different technology than the RAM used as main system memory (Typically Dynamic Random Access Memory, DRAM). It's a separate chip from main RAM that contains the firmware even when powered off, thus the "non-volatile" part.

@Konrad Rudolph You may be right, but the OP requested an explanation from a non programming perspective. Understanding binary helps to understand why computers at an architectural level start from 0. I don't know how to more clearly do that without referring to binary.
