I'm primarly a Ruby hacker but have played with everything from Commodore BASIC to Cocoa. I'd also like to explore Smalltalk, Go, Clojure, Scala, Haskell, OCaml, and maybe even C#.

I'm not currently a programmer by trade, but I'd like to get into it. I do write a lot of scripts to help me in my job.

My day-to-day personal computing setup is in Mac OS X, but I also use a Linux desktop as a backup server and for general tinkering; and I use Windows 7 at work.

I am also deeply interested (albeit at an amateur remove) in linguistics, especially historical. This dovetails with the fact that I am a conlanger -- someone who creates languages. (I'm not especially prolific at that, though.)

I also like science (especially cognitive science, evolution, and physics) and anthropology. My overarching interest in all these areas is the way something like a genome or language or computer language or culture changes over time and forks into unnumerable new ones.

comment Unknown option argument: “--multiprocessing-fork”
I don't understand how pymode or rope passes this argument to Vim, but this GitHub issue thread makes it look like this has to do with using HEAD by default; try using commit 20e14aa as it says in that thread. (I don't know if there's a newer commit that would also work, but it's worth investigating.)

comment How can I override commands with autohotkeys
As far as I'm aware, AutoHotkey simply isn't able to override the default locking function of Win+L. It might be something hard-wired into Windows (but I hope someone else comes along with a solution).

comment Force Windows 8 to use touchpad as single-button?
As a start, try putting a $ before the ^RButton::LButton line; that makes it so it isn't triggered by other hotkeys.

comment Microsoft Word file corrupted because I opened it in emacs
Did you write your essay on a laptop? Mac laptops generally have a backup system that works like Time Machine but is stored on the laptop's own hard disk, which keeps copies of things. You might be able to find it in the Time Machine GUI even if the good copy of the document didn't get saved on an external Time Machine volume. (There are also "versions" of documents stored each time you save, but I think that only applies to applications specifically written to that API; I doubt Emacs is included.)

comment Unintentional vi mode in iTerm on Mac?
That's for the system-supplied Terminal, not iTerm. xterm-256color or xterm-color would be settings to use; I don't know of anything using the string xterm-color256. None of these color settings should have anything to do with changing the shell's editing mode (which doesn't necessarily mean that they don't).

comment How to ignore white spaces in emacs evil surround
Maybe you should report this to the author of evil-surround. For now, just remember it's a difference in behavior between vim-surround and evil-surround.

comment How do I make vim not beep when autoinserting new lines?
It seems to have something to do with auto-pairs's autocentering behavior. I can't see why, though, since if I send the key sequences myself that it looks like the plugin sends, I don't notice any ill effects. For now, you can let g:AutoPairsCenterLine = 0 to stop autocentering, as a workaround.

comment How do I make vim not beep when autoinserting new lines?
I can confirm this behavior when typing at the bottom of a window, even with noshowmatch. I also notice that it annoyingly requires two presses of Esc to exit insert mode.

Do you know what plugin provides that functionality?
