comment What does the “execute” permission do?
What does this mean for non text-based filetypes eg. .png or .avi?

Yeah, with the settings changed. I'm an admin :( I tried doing the equivalent of "Run as Administror" for executables by making a shortcut of the settings file, right-click -> Properties, Shortcut tab, Advanced... then "Run as Administrator" is greyed out.

Clink is fantastic but this doesn't work for me, using cmd.exe or Console2. It still asks and it doesn't get autofilled.

comment I can't boot to Ubuntu after installing Windows 7
I installed Windows first on my SSD, and then Ubuntu second on a partition on my HDD, and also couldn't boot into Ubuntu. I followed the above steps (even though my filesystem that had the files you mentioned also had /bin etc - probably a very bad idea but I was desperate) and the output returned only the first line of your example: "Installation finished. No error reported". Is that a bad sign?

Absolutely brilliant. Oh, you can drag files to Chrome's tab bar to quickly open them, by the way.
