comment How to check if system has internet connection and can send email (via Shell)?
Your question was " What shell commands should I use to check availability of sending email?" - the telnet command connected to the foreign host, but the host rejected the connection. This is common to prevent spamming. However, it does answer your questions 1) your server does have access to the internet, and 2) it is able to communicate on port 25.

Check to see if you have a display control panel installed. Does anything else come up when you use [Winkey]+D?

comment Installing existing Ubuntu 11.04 (guest) in VirtualBox on Windows 7 (host)
What size did you make your VB drive? Maybe I am oversimplifying but "out of disk" appears pretty straightforward. You may have a new kernel that is running your /boot volume out of space.

You can tile a window across multiple screens - is that what you need?

comment Suggestions for iGoogle replacement/alternative?
Yahoo is actually still doing quite a bit in terms of active content and developer support - they just don't have that fresh-faced boy genius or richer-than-God public persona to keep them in the news.

comment Should I expect the key fingerprint as it appears in Putty key generation to match the server I am connecting to?
Agree with @grawity - if you have concerns contact the server operator and ask for their public key fingerprint (don't send them what you received, check what they send you against what you're seeing).

Remember that everyone has their own public/private key pair. The key you gave the server is your public key, to prove your identity. The server is offering you its public key during connection negotiation to encrypt the connection for secure shell. Two different purposes, two different key pairs.

See below. If you can communicate via telnet on port 25 you can connect via SMTP - if you can't, you can't.
