comment Java Installation Wizard Constantly Interrupted
The installation is running, and Java is acting up. I wonder if something is running. Hold down Ctrl + Alt + Del, and open the Task Manager. Under the "Processes" tab, click the button to show processes from all users. Sort the list by "Image Name". Are there any "java" or "javaw" processes running?

With all the installing and uninstalling, can you open up a command line (Start button, type "cmd", press Enter). Once the window opens, type "java" (no quotes). What is the output of that test?

Have you updated the firmware on the router? You may also want to check for updates to the laptop's chipset drivers and wireless drivers.

comment Firefox: Security concerns of sending referer headers
I think you may be right on the "security-conscious addon". I'm using the Web Developer Toolbar. There is an option to "disable referers" that seems to toggle "network.http.sendRefererHeader". The gotcha is that it does not indicate whether it's enabled or not. Thanks for the tip on what to look for.

Excellent suggestion for sure. I was able to remove the layers I was not looking for in GIMP. Getting closer to my goal. Now, I just need to crop to the layer to remove all the empty space around the layer, and end up with just to the element. I could try to do it manually, but if that could be done using an option in the drop list, something like "Crop to Layer", that would be perfect.
