comment How to enter tab symbol into web form?
Hmm, when I click "edit" on this answer, there is a tab character between the two markers, although it doesn't look that way. The "four space" thing is used for indenting code in SuperUser, mostly because Tabs in browsers are a pain in the rear. :)

Is it just one website in particular causing you grief? If it is, it could be something on their end.

comment Are there any benefits to ejecting my internal hard drive?
Ejecting may still help though. If ejected, the OS won't be running virus scans against it, file searches, etc. You should still see some benefit.

When you say "logged in", do you mean just on the laptop itself, or somehow into the university network?

comment Is it possible to get the serial number of a GPU without opening the case?
@BonGart I only have integrated graphics on my machine, so I could not confirm it for sure. If anyone can confirm this for sure, that would be great.

comment Is it possible to get the serial number of a GPU without opening the case?
@BonGart This technique is used to determine serial numbers on USB hard drives. It may also work on video cards. You are correct though that, depending on the device manufacturer, this may not properly identify the serial number.

comment Is it possible to get the serial number of a GPU without opening the case?
Further research shows that the value in the PNPDeviceID may be just an autogenerated number made up by Windows to uniquely identify the card. So, it is important to try and verify what you see.

There are "PNPDeviceID"s for other things too. Replace "Win32_VideoController" with "Win32_DiskDrive" to see the IDs for your disk drives. If possible, you may want to verify the numbers against something you can look at to make sure you're parsing the number correctly.

Found a tool called Access Fix Toolbox. For personal use, it comes with a $27 price tag. Slightly less steep. There is a demo, so you can try it out. Remember to try it off a backup of the database so if it doesn't work things don't get worse.

comment Is anyone familiar with this message in Kapersky Internet Security 2010?
I don't think the question is that bad. The security application is alerting on a clean file in quarantine. Depending on how the file got there (possibly by a previous action, or by magic), it's a valid question.

Does your program have the ability to reduce the thread count? I'd wonder if the program would still kill the machine, just take longer. Trying to determine if it's a bug in your code.
