The issue in your linked issue is that the date program is different on Linux vs OSX. It's not a difference in bash itself, but when using bash, you tend to use many small programs like ls, grep, etc, and any of those could be different. man date tells me that my OSX version is from BSD. The sort that comes with OSX is not GNU sort, I think, but you can install it. I did not quite understand this when I originally asked this question. See apple.stackexchange.com/questions/69223/…
