I started learning web design to support my efforts as a singer/songwriter. I'm still doing that, but these days my actual job involves building intranet resources as well. My skillset is PHP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript (I'm a big fan of jQuery).

comment How does Mac's command line compare to Linux?
The issue in your linked issue is that the date program is different on Linux vs OSX. It's not a difference in bash itself, but when using bash, you tend to use many small programs like ls, grep, etc, and any of those could be different. man date tells me that my OSX version is from BSD. The sort that comes with OSX is not GNU sort, I think, but you can install it. I did not quite understand this when I originally asked this question. See apple.stackexchange.com/questions/69223/…

comment How can I get Syntastic to recognize newer Ruby syntax?
Note: ~/.vim/syntax/ruby.vim has nothing to do with checking syntax in files; it's for syntax highlighting. See robots.thoughtbot.com/writing-vim-syntax-plugins

comment What could have caused my function keys to stop working?
This was the solution for me, using a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard with OSX. Function keys like F5 suddenly stopped working. Apparently I'd toggled "F Lock", which is next to F12.
