comment Windows 10, 'System' process taking massive amounts of RAM
Though unrelated, I would like to add that I've been experiencing many query timeout errors running SQL Server 2014 (both Enterprise and Express editions) on a Windows 10 machine with 4GB of RAM. I noticed that the System process was using upwards of 600MB of RAM because of the reasons detailed in this answer, and combined with multiple browser tabs, Outlook, and other programs, SQL Server was not able to obtain a memory grant, which was the ultimate cause of the timeout errors. The solution for me was to increase to 8GB of RAM.

comment How to get SVG thumbnails in Windows Explorer?
For anyone else who still cannot see the icons after these steps (including rebooting), I also had to go to Disk Cleanup and select Thumbnails to delete the existing cached thumbnails.

After finally getting the whole machine up and running, you certainly can use a standard AC power cord, thanks again!

Thanks for the input, I actually bought this from a local MicroCenter store not Newegg (that link was just to show the components) - and you're dead-on with the 3/18 analysis as I found it written directly on my "standard" wire. The ones provided just said 3G which was confusing me. I also just talked to a friend who agrees that this should work just fine.

comment What are some things to avoid if you want to keep your computer adware/spyware free?
Good suggestion, but I've already tried to get him to switch, no dice :)

After the reinstall I have setup a non-admin account for them, setup auto-update, installed Firefox, purchased McAfee AV, and currently utilize Windows Firewall. I explained that the kids shouldn't really download anything at all. In retrospect, AVG is probably all that they needed anyway...

Neat, I'll definitely look into this - sounds similar to SteadyState

lol - though so very very true, that would make their computer essentially worthless
