Yes, I was able to install Windows 7 without any problems as @daxlerod suggested. Also as you say, my files in the other partition are still there, so everything is good now. And just to understand: if MBR is not a part of the primary partition then why I got these errors when trying to install Windows XP?

Thank you. I found my old Windows 7 CD and it was installed without any problem. I also changed AHCI to Compatibility mode, do not know if it helped, too. About the note; I know this and I never would use Windows XP anymore but I will give the laptop to my mother and she's not very happy with trying new things. :) Anyway, she will try Windows 7 now.

Yes, in BIOS it is set to AHCI mode. I never used a RAID massive. I have a bootable USB with Linux Mint which I'm using on the new laptop but as I said the old one doesn't support booting from USB. Do you think that burning a CD with Windows 7 or some Linux distro will work? Unfortunately, I can't test this suggestion immediately because I don't have an optical drive and empty disks now.

The laptop is Toshiba Satellite A300-15E. I just formatted the old C: partition to remove the old OS and using it for data storage.

comment Using ext4 hard drive on Windows XP Pro machine?
I will do this only once so it wouldn't be a problem. Also the new ThinkPads are easy to change this type of hardware and the warranty is not canceled for changing HDD, RAM, WiFi Card etc. The second bay on the old Toshiba is empty also. So it will be a 2 min work to move the drive. Will try with ext2fsd or ext2read later today.

Linux Mint is on a SSD, the HDD is nearly empty - no OS there. The old laptop doesn't support booting from USB. I found this: sourceforge.net/projects/ext2read instead of ext2IFS. It says that it can read ext4. Probably will try with it...

comment How to check whether a laptop has two hard drive bays?
When looking for a new laptop mostly online I can't do this... I mean understanding it based on product specifications which could be found on the manufacturers' sites.

This is the alternative as you see on my other question. But this doesn't answer the question, so I can't accept it.

I don't know specific model. But let's say if both hard drive and optical drive are on SATA (e.g. III) interface instead of mSATA etc.?
