comment Intermittent hard disk I/O errors
I would try good quality sata cable replacement to. I had a drive loose connection on one of my systems and just moving it to a different port worked. since you tried that I would go with a new cable then I would suspect the controller on the system. If you have a cheepo pci... sata card you could try it off that to.

comment Any reason to prefer video adapter with two DVI ports versus one DVI/one VGA for DVI/VGA optional dual monitors?
display port is a bit of a pain due to needing adapters to get to most devices. dell switched from dp to hdmi on their latest releases due to so many tv's etc having a hdmi port but no dp.

comment How to route traffic via another machine before the default gateway
if its all traffic I would find it easier to add a 2nd ip to the linux box and have the router and linux box on a different network ip ie linux/router 10.1.1.x and every one else/linux 2nd ip on 192.168.1.x the masquerade lines arent to hard in iptables since you want to allow every thing. its 4? iptables lines with 2 nics may be a tad more if its just 1 nic and 2 ip's. also the monitoring app may make you have 2 nics just to be able to attach to 1 device and monitor every thing logically.

comment Space allocation for Solaris on Virtualbox
it is a file just like any other on the host system. when you are out of space on that host drive that's it. its no different then say recording a mp4 from your video camera that file keeps expanding till your os tells the app no more room.

depends on how expensive it is. The one I have experiance with dell handed out to their dcse tech's and it was garbage. you would need to do some reading of reviews and specs to see if there are any decent ones out there. for my systems I can get a new power supply for about 60$ so id rather have a backup power supply ready to go as a known good then a tester.

comment Samsung 32" LCD TV as PC Monitor, resolution problems
unfortunatly you may be out of luck there. nvidia seems to have gotten rid of their monitor ajustments in their drivers. I used to be able to adjust about every thing but now not so especially in linux drivers. you may be able to get away with adjusting timings by hand but it will be ugly.

comment Linux, can a home directory be symlinked?
I have done this before and suggest you do /media/storage/osver. when you upgrade to a new ver of os add a new folder after it is up and running normally as well as you have your users setup you can migrate their data. If I had more then just me on this pc when I installed ubuntu 11.4 i would have had to revert after a week or 3. the bad side to that is version specific configs in your users dir.... 11.4 doesnt work for hw accelleration in my config where 10 worked like a champ so reverting would have been ugly.

comment Start firefox in safemode in Ubuntu 9.04
firefox -no-remote -P Testing replace Testing with the profile name of choice and you have 2 copys of ff going. its a dev option but is possible. I usually have 4 copies of ff open at any 1 time and 150-300 tabs.

havent played with vista so not 100% sure. win7 you can go to the recovery consol boot option its what the xp recovery console was plus system restore and some others... I suspect vista has that option but am not sure. hopefully you made a recovery cd when you first got the pc. not sure if you can do one now or not.

for got to mention. did you test a known good psu or that psu on another board? I have seen many a dell not post and even with a simple power supply tester it shows good. put a known good psu in and the pc boots... unless you spend some money for a decent psu tester I would go with known good. you will probably end up playing more for a psu tester then getting a backup psu. bad power can do all kinds of wierd things so check that first when you start having odditys.

I was appaled by the msi lack of any diagnostics... usually you get some beep or flash some where but oh well.. from now on Im only getting systemboards with diagnostics on them. the asrock i have now has a # readout for posting so you can look up the codes plus power and reset buttons built in to the systemboard. Since i tinker a bit its easier on me to have it that way... for example Im putting that board in a Dell 2650 2u case :D
