for got to mention. did you test a known good psu or that psu on another board? I have seen many a dell not post and even with a simple power supply tester it shows good. put a known good psu in and the pc boots... unless you spend some money for a decent psu tester I would go with known good. you will probably end up playing more for a psu tester then getting a backup psu. bad power can do all kinds of wierd things so check that first when you start having odditys.

I was appaled by the msi lack of any diagnostics... usually you get some beep or flash some where but oh well.. from now on Im only getting systemboards with diagnostics on them. the asrock i have now has a # readout for posting so you can look up the codes plus power and reset buttons built in to the systemboard. Since i tinker a bit its easier on me to have it that way... for example Im putting that board in a Dell 2650 2u case :D

Sorry I missed the part of default action. there is still a control applet that sets default actions. If I go to windows tomorrow I will see about getting a screenshot of it.

The higher refresh certinaly has a chance to change the size of the display so does resolution changes. I have seen some go larger to. Unless you are trying to get closer to the max fps of your video card for a game and have good enough eyes to see it you may not need to go to max refresh. My old 19" I had to go to 75hz to keep from getting headaches. if I went to 1020x res for a long time for games I would have to use 80+

unless it was removed in recent versions of the driver I have used it MANY times since about 096? revision of the nvidia driver. I will need to boot in to windows tomorrow any ways so I will dig up the screen shots. even if the test pattern isnt available just change the screen background to a solid red or blue so that you can easily tell the edge of the screen with it. The feature I was talking about allows expansion and compression of the display through the driver to get it right to the edge of the screen. it is not for shrinking the image.

comment How to prevent one computer from accessing another behind a router?
Also I keep a repository of all my configurations and what software i install on my systems. If some one changes config files etc I will quickly know what was hacked and when. I also have a repository so that I can nuke and reload the os with minimal downtime. I store my repository on a flash drive that I only plug in when I do updates to config files and only long eough to commit the changes. I do the same with windows. all important data and special configs are always seperated and backed up for recovery. I usually wipe windows about 1ce a year for stability and security reasons.

If a system gets hacked it gets hacked doesnt matter the os. I would be more worried about the windows machine being the source of the trouble. With linux kill all the unneeded services, make real passwords and or use certificate type authentications.. follow standard security practices and update your software. That will be far safer then any windows machine in my opinion. Also you are only as secure as your weekest link be it a default password on a publicly accessible router or a well known hack for windows.
