comment How to prevent one computer from accessing another behind a router?
Also I keep a repository of all my configurations and what software i install on my systems. If some one changes config files etc I will quickly know what was hacked and when. I also have a repository so that I can nuke and reload the os with minimal downtime. I store my repository on a flash drive that I only plug in when I do updates to config files and only long eough to commit the changes. I do the same with windows. all important data and special configs are always seperated and backed up for recovery. I usually wipe windows about 1ce a year for stability and security reasons.

If a system gets hacked it gets hacked doesnt matter the os. I would be more worried about the windows machine being the source of the trouble. With linux kill all the unneeded services, make real passwords and or use certificate type authentications.. follow standard security practices and update your software. That will be far safer then any windows machine in my opinion. Also you are only as secure as your weekest link be it a default password on a publicly accessible router or a well known hack for windows.

comment Uefi Grub booting to Windows XP hangs at black screen
Ends up it was a bios glitch. I finally updated to the latest and it works from grub 2 2.00.6 beta that I had installed from fedora. I havent had a chance to update the ubuntu grub and such but bios 1.9 that my board came with also had an odd issue where the mouse would not work in it. so go figure.

comment fdisk / sfdisk not saving partitions on USB drive
please be more specific is it a flash drive or a real usb hdd? some flash drives are not capible of being partitioned. there are 2 modes in which a flash drive can be built. the way the firmware is written its either treated like a hdd or a special usb mass media device.

comment Moving files inside my NTFS partition is as slow as copying them. What could be the cause of this?
Many "copy" utilitys have a move option. Unstopable copier is one and I trust its file handleing capibilitys much better than windows both for speed and long file name handling that windows would puke on. the OP did mention about an _ as the starting char of the folder. after changing that it doesn't suprise me that it sped up the copy. windows explorer has alot of stupid problems when it comes to file handeling.

the drives were straight from a legacy system, I don't know that there is a efi grub partition on there. I thought I had installed a non efi grub but will have to check again. My ubuntu is a 32bit version as I had some issues with 10.4 x64 application wise. I may try installing server 2k3 or xp64 and see if that fixes it but haven't had time to do so yet. 2k3 is the highest I will be going as I don't plan to buy another copy of windows. The aged versions of windows I have now should suffice till wine works well enough. this almost feals like a grub bug as others have had this to.
