Which version of Windows do you want to look like? That is, Windows doesn't look like Windows.

comment Does All LAN Traffic Travel Through A Router
If you only have two computers, you don't need a switch. A crossover cable can serve as your network infrastructure.

Try shutdown, open it up and ensure all seatable connectors are re-seated. That's at least memory and your disk. If and when you get it working, MAKE RECOVERY DISKS. If you have valuable data on the drive, MAKE BACKUPS.

comment Is NAS limited to the speed of my internet connection?
Data transfer between a NAS and a host occur over a network, and speeds are typically limited by that network. Thus, answering your question relative to the data transfer rate limits of the network between the NAS and the host (your LAN) is a reasonable answer to your question.

comment Moving a File While It's In Use — How Does it work?
"References" are both processes with an open handle to the file and hard links (including the first file name) to the file. The data blocks are not marked free and available for reuse until the reference count goes to zero.

comment How much disk space would take to list every possible UEI-48 or MAC address?
If you're going to store in ASCII, you wouldn't store '0' or '1' for everything, you'd use hex. With 8-bit chars, you cut the expansion from 8:1 to 8:4, or 2. 48-bit address is 12 hex digits; 96 bits with 8bit characters or 84 with seven-bit ASCII. You could put two 48-bit addresses into 21 bytes of storage, even with character encoding.

I ended up getting back to the office two days later and copying the mounted drives to a script. Later, running the script after logging in to the VPN proved to work
