You can also use globbing while typing out the paths. Asterisk (*) is particularly useful -- like using a tab complete without having to pick alternatives (as long as something further down the path makes it unambiguous).

@techie007 - we used to refer to things like raw bit rate as the "guaranteed not to exceed speed."

comment Open an X application going through many hoops (SSH, vpn etc)
Actually, I did notice the tunnels. I saw no reason for their necessity. Regardless, localhost as the DISPLAY variable for a host without an X server running is incorrect.

comment How to change key mappings in Cygwin's Vim
Try it and find out. Function keys sometimes do not have common ways of mapping; that's hardware dependent.

However, you can talk to your domain admins and have them get their system time synced up to a more accurate clock.

I believe you can do what you want via syslog. That separates the generation of the log messages from the system that stores them, so the apps that generate the message have no access to the where they're stored. The logs can even be (and frequently are) on a separate server.

comment How safe is locking the screen?
If you are dissatisfied with the default X screensaver, you can get others or write your own. You can make unlocking as complex (or simple) as you wish, and as secure as you can program. Of course, with physical access to the machine, you won't be able to prevent reboots. But you mention that in the question.
