comment What is the big tree, and where is it located?
@smwikipedia: That scheme is very common. Disk partitioning and allocation ranges from two big slices (for file system and swap) to multiple partitions on each local disk. Note that network pseudo-disks are also mounted in the "big tree" -- you may want to try "man hier" or "man hierarchy" for an introduction into the general layout. Basically, you can separate out any directory and below as a mount point for another disk.

comment Block p2p downloading in my office?
Lots of techie info here and in other posts on various ways to accomplish the blocking you describe. However, you really need to get management support and policy behind you or people will just keep finding ways around it. Make sure the policy is general with respect to personal use, not limited to a particular tool or even protocol.

You can also use globbing while typing out the paths. Asterisk (*) is particularly useful -- like using a tab complete without having to pick alternatives (as long as something further down the path makes it unambiguous).

@techie007 - we used to refer to things like raw bit rate as the "guaranteed not to exceed speed."

comment Open an X application going through many hoops (SSH, vpn etc)
Actually, I did notice the tunnels. I saw no reason for their necessity. Regardless, localhost as the DISPLAY variable for a host without an X server running is incorrect.

comment How to change key mappings in Cygwin's Vim
Try it and find out. Function keys sometimes do not have common ways of mapping; that's hardware dependent.

However, you can talk to your domain admins and have them get their system time synced up to a more accurate clock.
