Just another sad, but unremarkable tale of a bright kid who squandered his potential and ruined his life by turning to a life of IT.

Since first embarking down this dark path, I've done a little bit of everything, from small businesses to large datacenters, Linux to Windows, networking and security, DBA roles and, in my darkest moments, even some light mainframe operations.

These days it's Microsft products paying the bills, for what difference it makes. Whether it's a multi-domain AD environment with tens of thousands of users, a small cluster of Linux webservers, or a tangled web of network cables, systems are all just complex tools to do complex jobs, perpetually in need of someone to make them perform better and ensure they're always available when someone needs them.

Since being a lawyer seemed to boring, being a doctor seemed to hard, and my idea of a good time usually involves using a powerful computer anyway, I really can't imagine doing anything else.

comment How to backup RAID 0 larger than 2 T?
@rootloop Time for you to upgrade. Start with a newer version of Windows, and use SSDs instead of RAID0. Problem solved. And, by the way, doing backups by taking monolithic, 2TB images of servers is not a good approach, so find a better approach to your backups while you're upgrading.

comment Why is it bad for me if my computer is infected, if I don't notice?
Why is bad for you, personally, to be infected with herpes if you don't notice? Same answer for your computers. You also don't want them infected with herpes, even if you don't notice it right away.

comment How do I reset the password on a Dedicated Micros DVR?
a) This only works in the unlikely event that you somehow lost the web password but not the telnet one and b) this is technically not a password reset, this is how you delete all the users on the local device (or so it appears).

According to the guide, A unit will have to be returned to the manufacturer to have a password reset. I think that means you have to return it to the manufacturer to have the password reset.

Well, you can learn with PowerShell just as well as batch... and you'll find Powershell much more useful and full-featured. For that matter, there's even a PowerShell ISE that can help you learn and punch up your scripts in ways you won' be able to do with batch and cmd.

comment outlook 2013 - 0x800CCC13 “Cannot connect to the network”
(First off, which profile? The user profile, or the Outlook profile?... though, either way...) If you recreated the profile, and the problem came back it seems to point at a problem with the operating system. Is re-imaging the machine an option? That's probably going to be the quickest, least painful way to fix this problem.

Why use batch for Windows 8? Time to start PowerShelling, son!

comment Dual monitors - primary monitor rotates 90 degrees counterclockwise (I DON'T WANT IT TO), secondary does not
Depends. Some video cards/drivers have their own... plug-in/control panel section, some don't. If your doesn't, then the part you described above is where you need to go.

You probably hit a shortcut key combination that rotated your display. Check the documentation for your laptop, and/or go into the graphics portion of control panel to change it back.

...and it hasn't occurred to you that a couple hard drives in "old" machines at home might actually be having problems? Why's that?

comment windows 7 enterprise : 'net use' fails with 'system error 50 has occurred'
@BaltoStar That's correct. net use by itself should return a "table" listing the mapped drives, or something like the image here, if there are none. Like I said, it's time for you to reimage/reinstall/reformat.

I've looked around the net a bit, and it looks like part of your networking stack is corrupted. Time to reimage/reinstall/reformat.

comment Can't RDP from Internet to LAN Server
I'm gonna go ahead and blame the E1200, because it's hard to go wrong doing that. Plug the server into the cable/dsl modem directly, and see if that doesn't yield better results. Also, anything in a home setting is off topic, so this will probably be closed pretty soon...

@RyanRies You think it's worth a migration? I'm more in the close-and-delete-it camp.

I don't know either, but look at what you have provided us - basically that a bunch of your PTPP VPNs throw a 720 error when you use Windows 8. Uh, alright, but that doesn't have any information that's going to be much good for troubleshooting.
