Windows 7 / 8 tool for amplifying sound / equivalent to pavucontrol? Installed Sound Booster, first thing: amplification by 500%, doesn't make sense. If I go anything above 100%, the quality becomes miserable. If it's on, the browser frequently crashes, if it's off, it never crashes... Definitely a no-go. |

Is it safe to put a Mac directly on the internet? @sidran32: I disagree. A router needs an operating system, and it's only going to be as secure as the operating system, the weakest link. And if that OS was WindowsCE, then I'd rather not put a router in between. In that sense, the "always better" was probably the reason. |

Windows 8 ISO image to USB stick? It halfway works. If you want to create a 64 bit bootable stick on a 32 bit operating system, then you need to copy over a working copy of bootsect.exe into the install directory. Typically Microsoft... Can't even create a working USB-Bootloading tool... |

Windows 8 ISO image to USB stick? @Raystafarian: Didn't have a free computer 'till today afternoon, so there was no point in trying. |

Windows 8 ISO image to USB stick? Just copy the files over ? You mean the ISO image file, or it's content files ? What about the boot sector part ? Is the "make active" not necessary anymore with NTFS ? |

Linux for 128 MB of memory Well, basically you have to remove the gui, and then you can use mplayer on the command line at lightening-speed. :)) apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras. Maybe the debian netinstall iso would be more appropriate, just there it's more of a pain to get the multimdedia working. |

Is it safe to put a Mac directly on the internet? Note that Safari is not any better than IE6 when it comes to security. Well actually, Safari is worse... |

Is it safe to put a Mac directly on the internet? Well, I certainly wouldn't. But then, I'm not a Mac user either. |

Oracle licensing /pricing? One more license that's no more than a disclaimer & an empty threat against pirating, but unlike others, it's clear and precise. I admit, I've made it a bad habit to not usually read them anymore. Silly silly, they reserve the right to investigate the use of the database - wonder how they want to legally do that - short of a legally obtained search warrant. |

Virtual Box and SSH Note that you can omit user@ from user@ip if the user on the target machine corresponds to the user you're currently logged in with on the development machine. |

Samba not found /etc/init.d/samba restart works very well on 9.10. I just had the issue, and it came with the upgrade to 10.04. It just changed to smbd. |

Unable to connect to windows shares without restart Funny, first it doesn't work, then I type net use \\servername\sharename which says that everything is ok. And then it works afterwards... - every time. |

Is NTFS on Ubuntu stable? You can read and write the data on the 64-Bit ntfs partition, but sometimes, windows won't start anymore afterwards (actually you needn't be reading/writing anything, mounting is enough...) ... |
